Hey, welcome to my podcast.

I realize that some of you might be saying, ”oh please, G-D, not another podcast.” so let me borrow a phrase from 2 AM infomercials: “but wait, there’s more”

I’ve been an insatiable podcast listener for many years. After hours of listening to celebrity podcasters (where the host and the guest engage in continuous name-dropping, and the interview is nothing more than a mutual admiration society session), I narrowed my list to podcasters that don’t waste my time. My promise is that I will not waste yours:

  • My goals are to educate and entertain, not to use the podcast to sell high-end coaching or courses - I don’t have any!

Wellness Events Review: Liza Calache, Event Producer of Holistic Health Educational Expo (10/12-13, 2024)

I'm so proud that I was able to host New Jersey's very first holistically Healthy Expo. It was held on October 12th and 13th in North Bergen, New Jersey. This was special because this was the first ever in New Jersey. It always happens in other big cities. But I wanted to put New Jersey on the map and not just put it on the map, but leave a mark there because the powerhouse of speakers that were there. I've been told have never been brought together in one room before. I still (to this day) get messages saying that they were so amazed at the information that they received. They didn't know the level of information that they were going to get. They just thought this was a regular expo where you visit booths and people try to sell you what they have. 

But this was an educational expo and quite a diverse and comprehensive one at that. That's what made this different.  For DAY ONE, the types of speakers in day one was about General Health, and we had everything from Biomagnetism to holistic dentistry. We had a holistic VET, we had homeopathy, even an executive chef (who happens to be my brother). He explained how you can stay healthy in your own kitchen. And so there was a wide variety of topics around this.  Then in DAY TWO, we covered cancer support because that to me is the new epidemic. I wanted to make sure that whoever is being plagued by this disease, or know somebody who is, they have the resources to make an educated decision to not just follow the mainstream, but to say, "Hey, there are other options out there, and let me see what's good for my body." 

I see patients all the time that come to me with a diagnosis of cancer.  They're thankful for the help I provide and the many support systems that we have. But then the problem that tends to arise is the COMPLACENSE that occurs once they're done with cancer treatments. Some  think, "okay, I'm done... I can just go back to the lifestyle I had before".  I've noticed that when somebody has cancer, you have to have a maintenance program because it's just really a matter of time before it's just gonna make its occurrence somewhere else. If the lifestyle does not stay up here, with diet, exercise, and all the other things that are needed. So recurrence is a big topic that people need to know about. It's not just "...okay, I had cancer, it's gone now. Okay, I'm good".  I think there needs to be more awareness that needs to be made about that for sure.

SMARTER AGING 3: ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE- A GLOBAL EPIDEMIC

Age-related dysfunction of the brain can escalate in aggressiveness and complexity over time as the victim progresses toward the end of life.  ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE (AD) is currently viewed as a progressive neurodegenerative disease that is uniformly fatal. The most common form is termed Late-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease (LOAD), which primarily impacts people over the age of 65 and is the focus of this article. In addition to its devasting impact on individuals with AD, it has a wide-reaching impact that touches every aspect of our society.  But there is hope. In the following pages, we’ll review the current state of the science and clinical approaches to AD, and introduce promising new ways to approach prevention and treatment. Making these changes will require a fundamental shift in how we approach not only AD but our health and healthcare as a whole. 

All stakeholders must work together to change the tide in this global epidemic. From individuals, families, and communities to healthcare, research, and private and government institutions, we all have the opportunity to be part of the solution. It won’t be easy, but to keep going in the same direction is unthinkable.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE WILL BANKRUPT HEALTHCARE
Without a drastic – and rapid- change in our approach, caring for people with dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, is predicted to bankrupt this country’s healthcare systems by the year 2050.  Currently, we spend more than $321 billion in direct healthcare costs caring for the more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. In large part due to the increase in our aging population, that number is expected to increase to 13.8 million, with costs projected to be over $1 trillion by 2050. [1] Evidence shows that taking a more holistic approach can improve quality of life [2 but this requires a different mindset and strategy. In addition to the staggering cost of healthcare, there is a hidden cost that often fails to receive attention: unpaid caregiving. 

More than 11 million unpaid caregivers spend an estimated 18.4 billion hours a year caring for family members with Alzheimer's or other dementias. The value of these unpaid services is estimated at $350 billion [2], exceeding the direct healthcare costs. However, this number is even greater in terms of total impact, as it does not account for the emotional, physical, and social toll, nor does it include lost wages and related benefits due to caregiving responsibilities. 

 AGING DISEASE
Alzheimer's disease is fatal and is the fifth‐leading cause of death among Americans aged 65 and older. [3] This number does not include those with Alzheimer’s who die of other diseases first, but where Alzheimer’s was likely a contributing factor. While people aged 65 and older only survive an average of four to eight years after diagnosis, some can live as long as 20 years. [3] 

Twice as many women as men are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and women account for almost 2/3 of the approximately 7 million Americans currently living with Alzheimer’s. [3e] Ethnicity also plays a role. Black/African American individuals have twice the risk of Alzheimer’s disease compared to Non-Hispanic white individuals, and Hispanic/Latino individuals are just slightly lower at 1.5x. [4] 

When looking at people 65 and older, the highest prevalence of AD is among Black/African American individuals at 13.8%, with Hispanic/Latino individuals at 12.2%, non-Hispanic white individuals at 10.3%, American Indian and Alaska Native individuals at 9.1%, and the lowest group being Asian American and Pacific Islander individuals at 8.4%. [4] The U.S. Census Bureau has predicted that the U.S. minority population will increase from 20% to almost half by 2060. Despite these statistics, most research has been conducted with non-Hispanic white populations, hampering both understanding of underlying causes as well as treatments for an increasing demographic. There are currently no good treatments in the conventional medical model, and thus people with Alzheimer’s are often led to believe that there is nothing they can do. Ending up in a nursing home often seems inevitable.


NURSING HOME VS HOME CARE
According to the CDC, as of 2020 there were more than 15,000 nursing homes serving more than 1 million residents, and for-profit companies owned 70%. [6] One of the top three reasons older people are placed in assisted living facilities and nursing homes is dementia, with Alzheimer’s being the most common type and accounting for almost half of all nursing home residents; this rate is even higher for Medicare beneficiaries. As people with Alzheimer’s disease age, they are often found to have other forms of dementia as well. [3]

Research shows that those who are in nursing homes do better when provided with more specialized services. However, less than 5% of nursing home “beds” are in facilities that provide these. [6] But nursing home care is not inevitable. More than 60% of people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias live at home, half of them living alone.  [6] This concept of “aging in place” may help alleviate the burden of nursing home care. It also can help slow the progression of the disease, as people are kept in familiar environments that provide a sense of belonging and purpose. This continued connection to their community also provides better opportunities for social and cognitive engagement.

Living at home requires aids and adaptations, as well as caregiver support. This brings up another challenge: “Who provides the support?” How we treat the elderly reflects our societal values. With an overemphasis on achievement and productivity, those unable to meet this standard are seen as “less important” and thus less valuable. Often, this intersects with traditionally female roles, including caretaking for the elderly, children, and those who are sick, infirm, or disabled. 

As women are often the primary caregivers, they are much more likely to disproportionately suffer additional consequences. Women from historically minority and marginalized groups with fewer resources and access to services are even more impacted. [3]

LEADING CAUSES OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
Alzheimer’s disease is a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. 

1. AGE: Age is the single largest risk factor for AD. The vast majority (90-95%) of people with AD are over age 65, with risk increasing with age. 

2. GENETICS: Specific forms of the APOE gene are associated with late onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD), the most common type that typically affects individuals after age 60. People carrying the E4 variant of the APOE gene have the largest genetic risk, based on research involving individuals primarily of European descent. Those with two copies of the APOE4 gene are estimated to have about a 60% risk of developing AD by age 85, and recent research suggests that the form of disease may be different than AD in those with normal APOE genes. [7] 

Interestingly, this study also found that almost everyone with two copies of APOE4 developed brain changes in beta-amyloid and tau consistent with Alzheimer’s Disease by age 55. But previous studies have estimated that almost half—40%—of people with two copies of APOE4 don’t develop Alzheimer’s disease, so it’s not necessarily inevitable. [8]

FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS OF AGING

There are a variety of influences that determine healthy aging.  According to Dr. Joshua Berka, enacting an early lifestyle that includes regular motion and exercise regimen, an intelligent diet and proper sleep.  Other elements contribute to a positive life-design include stress management (and a positive outlook), exercising brain use (to instill good health habits) against cognitive decline, having leisurely activities, having regular social interactions and eliminate alcohol, drugs and other toxins. AGING & MICROCIRCULATION EXPLAINED

When we think about aging, one common angle of this study is directed at LONGEVITY.  We can also think about LIFESTYLE CHOICES, and the many decisions that steer health. There’s also the study of GENETICS (both heredity and environmental effects or one’s epigenetics).  But as of lately, an area that's growing in attention is MICROCIRCULATION. 

Since 2019, there's been a publication by Dr. Kunlin Jin called "The Microcirculatory Theory of Aging". All the story that we previously received was about OXIDATIVE REDOX saying "you're burning, you're rusting and you're not recovering". And then the next story in medicine that we were taught is MITOCHONDRIAL BIOENERGETICS- saying that you're not transforming enough energy to be utilized.  This aligns with the belief that diseases (like cancer) are ubiquitous, making disease the leading cause of death here in the United States.

Moreover, HEART DISEASE (another common killer) doesn't start in the large vessels of the heart. It actually starts in the MICROVESSELS, what we call the resistance vessels. The precapillary arterials, these microvascular networks, and they're very sensitive. The slightest change in pressure results in a cascade of effects so much in our body. 

Enough evidence shows that the reason why we live, age, and die is the ability or inability to maintain functional tone of thousands of miles of microvessels. This means thousands of miles of vessels that have little tiny muscles inside of them- which are designed to hold a tone (not to open, not to close, but) to hold a functional tone. Just like your vessel or the pupil in your eye. That's just one sphincter. If you can visualize thousands of miles of these opening, closing, maintaining tone in relationship to the pumping of the heart.  It's not just the heart that's pumping all the blood through the body (and the heart's only responding many times based on how we're perceiving our environment). It makes perfect sense how this all affects anxiety and stress. It's not just the diet of food we put in our mouth and we process, transform and clear out. It is how we're integrating into our surroundings, how we feel about people, places and things. 

Studying AGING and LONGEVITY also comports with how we support daily performance and resiliency to bounce back from any disease- but the recovery aspect; most people aren't even recovering and sleeping. And it's now shown that individuals who have some level of insomnia, may also have a moderately increased risk of an acute myocardial infarction. That's a heart attack just from not sleeping! So little simple lifestyle hacks of gaining deeper sleep. I believe that we'll be really gaining in age, in health span and lifespan if we don't just try to buy tools or use medical devices to biohack, but actually take the beauty within our own DNA and to use that in an efficient manner to express itself in a way that we're designed to not just survive but also thrive.

"SMARTER AGING" part 2:  

Variants in genes regulating the inflammatory response have been implicated in AD. In 2013, a variant in the TREM2 gene was found to account for the next highest risk after APOE4. [9] Recently, a variant in the FMNL2 gene appears to link the connection between vascular disease in the brain with Alzheimer’s disease by reducing the clearance of amyloid in the brain. [10]

Research has revealed a number of other gene variants that are associated with AD more specifically in individuals with African heritage. Variants in genes linked to the immune response, and vascular systems were found to account for up to 30% of the heritability of AD in Black Americans. [11] A different APOE variant on APOE3, normally thought to be protective, was associated with an increased risk for African Americans if they also carried APOE4. New gene variants in ABCA7 have an even greater impact on AD risk for individuals with African ancestry vs European ancestry. [12] It is likely that ongoing research will continue to refine the genetic contributors for various populations, increasing our understanding of the disease and potential treatments.

We can’t change our genes, but they are not the only cause. While approximately 60% of patients with AD have APOE4 or other identifiable genetic risk factors, 40% don’t. [13] This is likely due to a combination of other genes that have recently been identified, along with dietary, lifestyle, and environmental factors. [8]

As with many other chronic diseases, this illustrates the importance of understanding how the interactions between our genes and environment can increase or decrease genetic predisposition for disease. These insights are crucial to finding clues that may help accelerate better options for treatment and even prevention. 

3. EPIGENETICS: Epigenetics involves changes that affect gene expression without changing the DNA sequence. It is the body’s ability to quickly respond to environmental factors, and has been identified as a significant contributing factor to many health issues including Alzheimer’s Disease. [14] It is one of the mechanisms by which diet and lifestyle factors impact genetics and contribute to AD – and how we can also leverage them to potentially reverse these processes.

4. ACCUMULATION OF BETA-AMYLOID AND TAU: The prevailing theory of why people develop Alzheimer’s Disease has been focused on the role of specific protein alterations in the brain called beta-amyloid plaques and, more recently, tau neurofibrillary tangles. While these changes are thought to be the hallmark of AD in the brain, the limited focus on this “amyloid hypothesis” ignores scientific research into other biological mechanisms that contribute to the disease process.

Scientific research is shedding light on the complexity of Alzheimer’s disease that goes far beyond beta-amyloid plaques and tau protein tangles. In fact, these changes are now thought to be a result of the underlying biological mechanisms that can lead to AD - which likely explains why pharmaceutical companies have pursued treatment without much success. [9]

This single-minded focus on the amyloid hypothesis, excluding other theories that challenged this accepted dogma, has significantly contributed to the lack of progress in finding treatments. [9] As a result of this and other biases, Alzheimer’s Disease research has been grossly underfunded compared to other chronic diseases such as heart disease and HIV. 

But even the funds invested have failed to deliver significant progress. Despite spending over $40 billion on drug development over the last 25 years, the FDA has approved only a handful of medications that are woefully inadequate in improving symptoms and disease progression. [15] None address the underlying causes and we have no cure. 

Clearly, we need a different approach. Fortunately, dedicated scientific researchers have been making significant headway in understanding the underlying causes and exploring innovative approaches to treatment. With appropriate funding, these lay the foundation for more fruitful results that also address inequities in research and treatment access.

5. NEUROINFLAMMATION: Inflammation in the brain has been associated with several neurodegenerative diseases, of which Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common. [16] In AD, this involves specialized cells in the brain called microglia. Damage to these microglia leads to dysfunction and degeneration of neurons, which then creates a circular cascade of more inflammation and more damage to mitochondria and neurons. [17] 

Cytokines and the inflammasome are a central part of the neuroinflammatory process, activating numerous cascades that increase the pro-inflammatory response and deposition of beta-amyloid plaques that damage neurons.. [9]

Various toxins as well as microbiological agents including viruses, prions, parasites, and bacteria have also been associated with triggering an inflammatory response and the development of AD. [18]

6. MITOCHONDRIAL DYSFUNCTION: Maintaining healthy mitochondria is essential for biological functions, including in the brain. Mitochondria have been implicated in the development of many age-related diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD). [19] Mitochondria are considered the powerhouses of our cells, producing the energy we need to live in the form of ATP. Due to lack of energy stores in the brain for fat and glucose, which typically fuel cells, the mitochondria must produce the energy needed. Dysfunction of mitochondria has an outsized impact on the brain due to the high energy requirements of the neurons and glia. [19]

One of the mechanisms by which mitochondrial function is affected is through the connection of inflammation and oxidative stress – two biological responses that go hand in hand. The mitochondria create oxidative stress as part of the normal process of ATP production. In the face of excess energy demand, including inflammation, the level of oxidative stress can exceed the normal antioxidant mechanisms and lead to damaged mitochondria.

Another consequence of inflammation and oxidative stress is the disruption of normal maintenance that includes the ability to destroy old or damaged mitochondria, as well as generate new ones. This process of mitochondrial autophagy and biogenesis has been found to be related to aging and the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. [16]

7. VASCULAR DISEASE: Alzheimer’s disease is associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, associated with beta amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tau tangles in up to 70% of people with Alzheimer’s disease. [10] When blood vessels become diseased, blood flow to the brain is restricted, causing neuronal cell death. This leads to a circular cascade of inflammation and oxidative stress, and further damage to neurons in the brain.

Many diseases are associated with increased cardiovascular risk, including obesity, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Each of these is also associated with inflammation and oxidative stress as well as mitochondrial dysfunction. It is likely a combination of the various factors, in addition to vascular dysfunction, that connect them with Alzheimer’s disease risk. 

MODIFIABLE RISK FACTORS: With all of these significant contributors to Alzheimer’s disease, it’s important to remember that we have some control over many risk factors - and they are thus potentially modifiable.  The brain is an incredibly complex organ, and we need to reframe our reductionist thinking to approach the brain as an evolving, complex network that adapts to biological, social, and environmental influences to create a better approach to diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. 

It is estimated that 40% of AD is related to modifiable risk factors [3], including:

insulin resistance                            • glucose dysregulation

hypertension                                    • dyslipidemia

obesity                                            • physical inactivity

hearing loss                                    • smoking

alcohol                                            • traumatic brain injury

low levels of socialization and cognitive stimulation

air pollution     

These are all potential areas where we can improve both prevention and treatment and understand the protective mechanisms that may explain why some people don’t get Alzheimer’s disease despite multiple risk factors – including genetics.

EARLY DETECTION: Currently, there is no treatment to effectively cure Alzheimer’s, and the more the disease has progressed, the more difficult it is to slow progression or even reverse course. 

Early detection is a crucial component to reducing morbidity and mortality from many diseases, and this needs to be extended to Alzheimer’s Disease. It is evident that metabolic and brain changes can start 20 years or more before symptoms appear. New blood tests are emerging that may help us identify people with very early changes in brain biology – long before symptoms appear. [19] Having this information early may help to develop strategies to slow or even reverse them before a person ever develops symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease. 

Diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure are some of the most common diseases that predispose to Alzheimer’s Disease [19], and these also have altered metabolic and cellular changes that can be seen years or even decades before diagnosis. Here, too, early detection enables addressing these earlier in the disease process and can contribute to improving our approach to Alzheimer’s Disease as well. [20] While conventional medicine does not effectively address the root causes of these diseases, Personalized Genomic & Functional Medicine has been shown to do just that – especially if addressed early. 

In Part 2 of this series, we’ll look at ways in which we already have many of the tools we need to make a difference in the treatment and potential prevention of Alzheimer’s disease today. 

Op-ed: New Tools for Proactive Health- By Roberta Kline, MD


Heart disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, liver and kidney disease, and many types of cancer are just a few of the health conditions that women can face, especially as they age. The general advice is to eat healthy, get adequate sleep, exercise regularly, and manage stress. You do your best to follow these, as well as get your recommended pap smears, mammograms, and basic bloodwork. Later in life, you may get a colonoscopy and bone density.

That’s a great start, but how do you know what you’re doing is working?

Wouldn’t it be great to know more about your body and how it’s functioning – before you develop a serious disease?

The truth is that these health issues often provide clues long before you have symptoms, and being proactive with your health includes getting the right tests at the right time. Some tests evaluate predispositions for health issues, enabling a personalized plan. Others help assess how well these strategies are working and where you need to adjust.

Advancements in lab technologies have made it possible to do in-depth analyses of most aspects of our genetics, epigenetics, biochemistry, and cellular functioning. While each woman’s needs differ depending on age and health history, here are some of the tests I often recommend for proactive insights into one’s body and why.

1. DNA: Learn about your risk for inherited diseases (genetics), predispositions you can alter through diet & lifestyle (nutritional genomics), and potential issues with medications (pharmacogenomics). This enables you to create a personalized plan for screening tests, diet and health strategies, and medication choices.

2. Metabolomics: Learn how your organs and biochemistry are operating at a cellular level with blood, urine, or saliva tests. With these you can detect early changes in every aspect of your biology, including blood sugar, vitamins, and minerals, hormones, bone metabolism, heart disease, stress, inflammation, cognitive function, and much more. Detected early, many of these changes are reversible.

3. Microbiomics: Learn how your gut is functioning in response to your DNA, diet, and lifestyle by looking at the bacteria that play a key role in your body’s biology and biochemistry and how your gut may be impacting your health.

4. Epigenetics: Besides learning how fast your body is aging, you’ll learn how your past and current health practices and life experiences impact your health by altering your gene expression – and how you can improve this.

5. Imaging: Detect abnormal masses or structural abnormalities in the body including tumors and cancers, aneurysms, low bone density, brain volume, blood vessel calcifications, and much more. Although CT and X-ray technologies play a role, MRI and ultrasound are safest for regular screening because they don’t involve radiation. The advent of whole-body MRI makes it now possible to see the whole body in one scan.

Despite the potential benefits, none of these strategies are currently standard in our current disease-based health model.

It will be challenging to change our healthcare system from a reactive model to a proactive one, and will require a fundamental shift in how we approach health and healthcare. Prevention and early detection strategies are often more resource-intensive in the short run, even though they offer long-term savings and better health.

But you don’t have to wait for the system to change. As we work to create a different global mindset and reprioritize resources, you can already benefit from the many innovators creating new solutions that exist today.

Balance and Longevity: Starting with RESET

We all reach a point in our lives where we've gotten stuck in ruts where it seems really hard to even conceive of CHANGE. Change can be very scary, especially when, when it's on a larger scale. You know, the way we eat, the way we exercise our whole lifestyle is often very intertwined with our social interactions, with our work, with our expectations of how we're supposed to behave, how we're supposed to live our lives in our current world. That pressure to do and produce and be busy all the time is actually very detrimental. 

These habits that we create as coping mechanisms sometimes don't really serve us in the long run. So when it comes time to change, how many of you have tried a drastic change in diet, decided to take on a really rigorous boot camp exercise program, thinking that, "okay, I'm going to do it this time". And most of the time it fails. And it's not because you fail, it's not because you don't have the willpower. It's not because you don't have the strength. It's because success comes from building upon success, building upon your inner strengths, rather than trying to push and punish yourself into something that may not work for you.

The idea of reset comes from a different framework. It's about making small changes to reset how we think, how we feel, how we act. That is more in alignment with our goals of where we want to be. In our evolution, we're always, as a species hitting a point of needing to grow, needing to change in order to adapt to a new environment, in order to be better at whatever it is that allows us not just to survive, but to thrive. Initiating a reset at these points in time also applies to our lives. It allows us to take a step back and say, "what do I need to change to grow, to become the person in whatever way that looks like for me, that I wanna be next. Where do I wanna go in my own growth and evolution so that I can have the energy, the vitality, the enthusiasm for living life the way I want".


WELLNESS PHILOSOPHY 101 

LONGEVITY is not just a race to get to however old you can be in terms of chronological age. It's not a competition, but it's rather a form of self-love... and that comes with BALANCE. Life throws us all sorts of curve balls, whether it's internal or external in our lives. Balance is something we need to work towards- in order to give us resilience.  Nature teaches us to (automatically) try to regain balance when we fall or when we stumble. 

As an example, if you've ever tried standing on one leg- it's a challenge, right? If you add to that challenge by maybe lifting that leg higher or doing some other pose that adds more challenge to, to your balance.  When you're focused and you're grounded and calm, it's much easier to stay in that balance. But if your mind starts wandering about, "oh, I gotta do this today, your to-do list" or something that happened yesterday, it's very easy for those thoughts themselves to throw you off balance. And then you'll either put your foot down because you need to some extra stability, or you might fall altogether. The goal of balance is not to be able to stand on that one leg for the rest of your life. That's not possible, but it's about, okay, how do you get back into that place of balance when something throws you off? That's RESILIENCE. And that, to me, is the core of creating health for as long as we can. 

RESET to me, is a very forgiving way that is full of self-compassion to make these decisions without judgment, without guilt, without all the 'woulda-coulda-shoulda's.  We are very good at that negative self-talk. But it really doesn't help us regain balance. It doesn't help us in our RESET. We can take these moments as "the past has passed". I've gotten where I am today with all the choices. What choice do I want to make now to take me down the path that will give me the health and the life that I am desiring now?

PART 1: RESET & EXERCISE
When it comes to longevity of however you're going to RESET your life, whatever new programs, new behaviors, new habits that you decide to incorporate in your health program, the worst thing to do is to do something because you think you should... you usually end up making it boring. Follow somebody else's instructions without really thinking, "is this really the right thing for me?"  As an example, I find that using creativity is the best way for me to exercise is to make it fun. Now, exercising on the treadmill is boring. You're not going anywhere. You're just walking in the same place for 15, 20, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, however long you do it. When you are walking outside, you have an ever-changing landscape. You're out in nature. But indoor in the treadmill. Yeah. Not so much.

This is one of the reasons why so many treadmills purchased with great intentions end up serving as clothes hangers, storage places, uh, you know, get donated or sold on eBay. It's because it really didn't fulfill a need that we all have. And that's for creativity and fun. So the first thing I do when working with clients is to find out what is fun for them. For me, when I started ballroom dancing, I realized this was an exercise I could do forever and never feel like I was exercising. It was just fun. So when, on the days that I work out on the treadmill, I decided to be creative and translate that into my workout. So now I chacha, I salsa, I swing, I foxtrot, I do these dance moves, obviously modified for the treadmill so I don't fall off. And I've done that in the beginning. <laugh>, it helps me have fun. It gives me joy. And before I know it, whatever time I'm on that treadmill flies by because I'm not focusing okay, on how many miles or how many minutes. I'm just one with the music I'm feeling the music, I'm moving with the music. And that for me is the best way to get my exercise in.

AN OVERVIEW ON ENERGY HEALING

Energetic healing has been practiced by many cultures and in many forms over the centuries. While mainstream medicine has embraced some forms of energetic modalities, by and large it has viewed most as “alternative” and “non-science based”. This is slowly changing as the science is catching up to be able to explain this ancient practice. 

The term "energy medicine" has been in general use since the founding of the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine in the 1980s.  Energy medicine often proposes that imbalances in the body's "energy field" result in illness, and that by re-balancing the body's energy-field health can be restored.[5] Some modalities are described to "bring balance to the body's overall wellness", while others bring claims of  addressing pain, detoxing, cell regeneration or improve overall energy.

ENERGY IS EVERYWHERE
Everything is energy. Quantum physics has demonstrated that everything exists as a vibrational energy. Some forms of energy have a frequency low enough to make the object solid and therefore visible and physically tangible, such as concrete, trees, mountains, and the human body. Others, such as sound, light, heat and gravity are invisible – but they are no less real. 

Every living thing requires energy to exist and function, and this comes in different forms. For example, in the human body are “energy generators” called the mitochondria. These tiny powerhouses in our cells convert fat, protein and glucose into ATP – the energy that fuels everything that is needed for us to be alive. (see review on the mitochondria)

While the science behind how energy exists and is utilized for health and well-being is quite complex, efforts have been underway for more than 30 years to create a more approachable understanding.


THE SCIENCE OF ENERGETICS: THE BIOFIELD
The Biofield is a relatively new term developed in 1992 to describe the concept of energy in a more unified way, integrating knowledge gained from traditional practices with that of modern science. [1] Three of the main scientific principles underlying our current understanding of the Biofield energy are thermodynamics, physics and quantum physics.

The First Law of Thermodynamics is a conservation law, meaning that the total amount of energy in the universe is constant, therefore it cannot be created or destroyed but only transformed. 

Physics operates on the principle that energy is the ability to do work, and there are 4 types of energetic forces found in nature: gravity, electromagnetism, and two related to atoms. 

Quantum physics demonstrates that all matter is energy, composed of atoms and subatomic particles that are always in motion. This energy is never static in its natural state, rather it is vibrating at a specific frequency. Sometimes that frequency is readily measured, as in the electrical signals from various parts of the body. The ECG (electrocardiogram) measures the electrical activity of the heart, the EEG (electroencephalogram) for the brain, and EMG (electromyogram) measures electrical activity in response to a nerve’s stimulation of muscle. These are all standard in Western Medicine.

In addition to the physical body, our food, thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and consciousness are also composed of energy. The end result is a complex interaction of multiple vibrational frequencies that either work in harmony or are creating dissonance. 

“The concept of biofield regulation offers a shift from a mechanical, chemistry-based view of biology to an information-based view.” [1]

This, then, is the biofield: a complex energy field responsible for the generation, maintenance, and regulation of biological homeodynamics. Cell biology and biophysics research has validated that our own electromagnetic and other types of energetic fields play active roles in many biological processes including embryonic development, tissue repair, inflammation, pain, cell-membrane potential, cell signaling and other communication, and even as information encoded in our DNA. [1, 2, 3] 

The ongoing exchange of information that is required for living systems to maintain their integrity could be considered to be the true “language of life”. While much of this language has been described to date as electromagnetic, there is growing evidence for the role of quantum energy as well. [1]

ENERGY IS HEALTH
When that vibrational frequency or information flow is disrupted or altered, cellular health suffers and the end result can range from minor aches and pains to major illness. But now our knowledge of the Energy of the Biofield also provides the opportunity for healing in a much more effective way that can complement or even replace the need for more invasive conventional therapies. 

ACUPUNCTURE AND ACUPRESSURE
The ancient modalities of acupuncture and acupressure are now thought to operate within the connective tissue biofield that runs along the meridian lines, creating a rapid and effective communication channel [1] that may result in epigenetic changes. (see DNA methylation)

ULTRASOUND
With a wide range of frequencies available, clinical uses for ultrasound have expanded from limited diagnostic and treatment (such as lithotripsy for kidney stones) to advanced assessment and treatment of a wide range of tissues – even including surgical procedures. [4]


ELECTROMAGNETICS
PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic fields) devices have a wide range of frequencies available, and can influence cell membrane potentials of many different tissues to enhance communication and increase blood flow, decrease inflammation and activate a number of genes [3] possibly through epigenetics. 

Pharmacology is also leveraging electromagnetics to explore more effective ways of getting medications into cells. Drug delivery systems are being developed using nanoparticles designed to manipulate cell membrane electromagnetic fields to improve absorption.

No longer relegated to a few small corners of the healing world, energetic medicine has come into its own as an advanced way to view health and to promote healing.
